Exploring Self-Reflection in the Beauty of Flowers, Landscapes, and Mountains as Nature’s Mirrors
What Do You See When You Look at Me?

In response to a prompt “What Do You See When You Look At Me?” by Annelise Lords for Dancing Elephant Press Pub.
Observing the picture above, memories flood back of gazing at the birds perched atop that tree, accompanied only by a sense of solitude and chilliness. It was the height of the COVID era, specifically in December 2020. The view from the window displayed a world cloaked in shades of white and gray as far as my eyes could discern.
In the stillness of winter, the desolation reflects my personal solitude. Yet, within this wintry hush, a silent beauty resonates, whispering stories of my strength, resilience, and the delicate art of discovering warmth within myself.

As time elapsed, the arrival of spring in 2021 transformed the scene. Vibrant hues began to unfurl behind our residence, extending into the wilderness. A myriad of colors, including pink, white, abundant yellow, and purple, burst forth like a lively competition.
Joy swept over me as the gloomy months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds came to an end. Witnessing the melting snow brought immense happiness. The warmth embraced me, relieving the need for thick layers of clothing.

What do you see when you look at me?
The vibrant yellow petals seem to capture the essence of pure happiness. It’s like holding a handful of sunshine that instantly lifts my spirits and brings a warm smile to my face.
Do you know?
Yellow flowers embody the promise of new and exciting beginnings. It’s like each blossom holds the potential for a fresh start, making it a heartfelt gift to wish someone well on their unique journey.

I wasn’t the only one reveling in the seasonal shift. Bees joyfully danced amidst the sunflowers, and butterflies fluttered around me as if greeting me with a, “Hello Elvie, how are you?” Their presence seemed like a cheerful invitation, urging me not to be sad. “We’re here to sing and dance for you. Come, join us in reveling in the beauty of nature.” So I did.

Winter transitions to spring, and with the arrival of summer, the mountain hike becomes a pure delight. Singing and dancing with unrestrained joy, I express gratitude for the breathtaking nature enveloping me. With each step, I acknowledge the gift of having two feet, enabling me to ascend and witness the unparalleled beauty bestowed upon us by nature.
What Do You See When You Look at Me?
The Poem
When you look at me, do you see The colors of flower petals dancing free? Or landscapes stretching out in serene grace Maybe mountains towering, a powerful embrace
Do you see your reflection within my eyes Or the depths of my soul, where emotion lies What do you see when you look at me? A canvas of beauty, a world to be.

In the forest, the flowing water signifies life’s ceaseless rhythm, mirroring the resilience and adaptability essential in our journey. It imparts lessons on embracing change, gracefully navigating obstacles, and appreciating the beauty within perpetual motion — a poignant reminder that akin to the stream, our lives weave into an ever-changing, interconnected soft satin fabric.

The river, adorned with cascading waterfalls, mirrors life’s abundance and the constant influx of inspiration. It signifies the grace of receiving from above and the beauty of sharing one’s essence with the world below. In this symbiotic dance, we learn the power of generosity, nourishment, and the interconnected flow of our daily lives.

The time has come here I am your favorite color of the year. What do you see when you look at me?
When I observe the leaves, transitioning from vibrant green to a golden hue, then withering into a deep brown before gracefully descending to the ground, I ponder their journey. Will the wind carry them away, or will they be embraced by a blanket of winter snow? Yet, in my heart, I hold the certainty that, dear as ever, spring and summer will return.

Closing Thoughts
When you look at me, what do you see? Perhaps the vibrant colors of a blooming flower, the serene beauty of a vast landscape, or the majestic presence of a towering mountain. But beyond these external observations lies the reflection of my inner self, shaped by experiences, emotions, and aspirations. Each glance holds a story waiting to be discovered, a journey waiting to be understood. Let us strive to truly see and appreciate one another for the complexities and wonders that lie beneath the surface.
