Exciting Improvements to the Modern Women Publication
Join our publication and grow with us from the ground up

With a full belly and a full heart yesterday on Christmas, I had a spark of inspiration.
My vision with the Modern Women publication is to create a place to elevate, inspire and empower women — both as readers and as writers. I would also love to grow Modern Women to show in the top 5 publications when you search “women”.
With that in mind, I’m making the following improvements:
Expanded submission guidelines
The original guidelines felt a little narrow so I’m expanding them. I want women writers to feel that the majority of the stories they share on Medium can be published through Modern Women.
Why? What you care about as a writer is likely what other women care about as a reader. Showcasing the interests that you care about will help expand the reach and breadth of the Modern Women publication.

New categories of stories
I’m re-organizing the homepage of the Modern Women publication to cover the following categories:
- Self: Stories about you, life lessons, struggles, how-to’s, advice, memoirs, desires or anything that speaks to our relationship with ourselves.
- Relationships: Stories about dating, partnerships, marriage, friendships, family relationships or any other kind of relationship.
- Motherhood: Stories about anything and everything to do with motherhood from conception to empty nesting.
- Career & Business: Stories about your career, business, entrepreneurship and making a living in whichever way you choose to do.
- World: Stories about the world and what matters to you such as feminism, politics, society, culture, spirituality.
- Self-Promotion: Coming soon! Remember my vision is to elevate women through this publication. So think of this as a classy advertising section to share about your own business (e.g. books, courses, subscriptions, services etc.). I’ll be sharing specific guidelines for this section soon so it falls within the Medium rules.
Many stories will fit into multiple categories. These sections will be managed by tags and I’ll be reorganizing our current stories to fit within them. I’ll send you a private note if I end up swapping tags in your story.
Monthly Writing Prompts
A big thank you to Delia Pena-Gay for the idea of monthly themes. I’ll be creating monthly writing prompts to keep the creative juices flowing. The best part is that you can write for any of the current or previous monthly prompts.
December’s prompt was about writing your love story in “How We Met”. Stay tuned for January’s prompt that I’ll share next week.
The Way Forward
I’m as serious as I can be when I say I want to grow this publication. It’s more than a passion project for me — I truly want to support women in any way I can. A big part of that is helping other women to grow their writing careers.
If you’re feeling as inspired as I am, I’m also going to be looking for a partner Editor to join me. Check out this post below:
I’m looking forward to growing with all of you beautiful women!
With love, Megan
