Repents for using “transgender pronouns”

Rosaria Butterfield, a self-hating “ex-gay”, says she “publicly sinned” by using “transgender pronouns” and she has written an article for reformation 21 repenting for this. She is repenting for the “sin” of using the correct pronouns to refer to transgender people. She is repenting for not misgendering transgender people. She is repenting for wanting “to meet everyone where they were and do nothing to provoke insult.”

She is repenting for being kind.

False witness ≠ lying

Butterfield argues that “Using transgendered pronouns is a sin against the ninth commandment and encourages people to sin against the tenth commandment.” The ninth commandment is found in Exodus 20:16, and reads, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”

Bearing false witness is more than lying. It is telling lies that are meant to get someone in trouble. It is falsely accusing someone of doing something wrong. It is not — in any way, shape, or form — using any kind of pronouns, as pronouns are not a form of witness against someone.

Bearing false witness is a sin, and when bigots call all LGBTQ+ people “groomers,” they are bearing false witness.

Butterfield claims that using transgender people’s correct pronouns is “crafting a relationship on falsehood.” This takes some contortions to parse, but she is saying that it is a lie to use pronouns that don’t match someone’s assigned sex at birth. I suppose calling all cats “she” and all dogs “he” is a lie then too?

However, since pronouns are not a statement, a pronoun cannot be a lie. If a car cuts me off in traffic, but I cannot see the driver, and I say, “Ugh! He cut me off!” — is that a lie if a woman was driving? No, because she did cut me off. The pronouns have nothing to do with the factuality of the statement.

And, how does this encourage “people to sin against the tenth commandment”? The tenth commandment is found in Exodus 20:17, and reads, “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”

I cannot wrap my head around this one. Who or what am I encouraged to covet when I use a trans person’s correct pronouns?

Enemies of Christ

Butterfield then goes even further into hatred and says, “Transgenderism is satanic.” She does not elaborate on this, but continues:

The world, the flesh, and the devil are not Christ’s friends. Trans identity and Jesus are not coterminous. It’s one or the other. Christians need to learn how to love their enemies, not pretend their enemies are their friends.

Let’s be clear here: Butterfield is saying that transgender people are enemies of Christ simply because they are transgender. She seems to have forgotten that “we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12).

Our enemies are not people. Our enemies are principalities and powers and rulers. Our enemies are governments passing laws against people.

God is binary

Butterfield also declares that “the Christian faith is inherently binary, not non-binary.” This is so patently false it is absurd. The Christian God is not binary, they’re trinary.

This is a fundamental belief in evangelical Christianity. God is a Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I was taught in evangelical churches that humans are also triune beings, made up of body, soul, and spirit.

When I read Genesis chapter 1, I see God using plural pronouns for Themself:

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. — Genesis 1:26–27

Would it then be a sin to call God Him?

Repent for your hate instead

Butterfield needs to repent again, for her hatred of LGBTQ+ people, especially transgender people. God created us LGBTQ+ and God doesn’t make mistakes. God loves us just as we are. It is not a sin to use the pronouns someone asks you to use. God is Love and love is love.
