You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. Exodus 20:16

This is one of the Ten Commandments, the Big Ten, the Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. Most Christians would say that breaking one of these is a Very Bad Thing to do. And yet, that is exactly what they’re doing when they call queer people “groomers”.

This commandment is often simplified to “Don’t lie”, but the text actually says we shouldn’t “bear false witness”, or tell lies about someone in order to get them in trouble.

There are times when lying is a good and right thing to do. If you’re hiding people in a secret room in your house and the Nazis come by and ask if you’re hiding anyone, it is good and right to say “no.” But there is never a time when lying to get someone in trouble is good and right.

And when you accuse someone of pedophilia simply because they are LGBTQ+? That’s bearing false witness. That’s lying to get someone in trouble. That is bad and wrong.

And that is a sin.

Esther learned to read when she was four years old, and began writing shortly thereafter. She is a queer Christian poet, crafting with words to create art and music.
