Everything Ethereal

Delicate, light, gauzy, spiritual, otherworldly stuff

It’s hard for me to think of E things that aren’t elephants. When I type the letter e into my Google Photos search bar, it autofills the following suggestions: ear, eating, earth, Easter egg.

None of these are things that I’m particularly excited to share.

Instead, I decided to wrap my E photos around an adjective: ethereal.

Oxford Languages defines ethereal as, “extremely delicate and light in a way that seems too perfect for this world.”

I love this definition. So, here goes.

Snow

Snow is an ethereal thing — soft, light, delicate. Not only is a shimmering, crystalline blanket of snow too perfect for this world, but it makes the world more perfect, too.

Light

Sometimes the light is ethereal, or it makes things look that way. My son will point out particularly enchanting light on hikes through the forest, which makes me both happy and proud.

Overall, I guess sunset feels more ethereal to me than sunrise does.

At daybreak, the light is often so intense and bold, there’s nothing delicate about it. But it fades into dusk behind trees and hills, diminishing in its gentle brilliance…dissolving into stars.

Fog

Fog diffuses the light even further. It shrouds the landscape in ethereal mist, creating a vision of the Other World.

I previously shared a story about the Celtic name for this ghostly mist, The Féth Fíada. Do you agree with the Celts’ magical description?

That’s all I have for now.

Thanks to Anne Bonfert for kicking off the E photos with her lovely story that actually included real elephants!

What E photos have you taken? Anything excellent, exuberant, or existential? Photos of the earth, or even an earthworm? Please share!
