Abstract

ris on a couple of previous trips by leaving it until last! I discovered a site called Secret Paris when I was teaching French so I want to check out some of those places but this was in 2019 so they’re probably not so secret now.</p><p id="908d">Then I’m going to make my way up to Poland via Ghent and Antwerp ( just added because of <a href="undefined">JamieWrites</a>), the Netherlands and Germany and I’m undecided if I’m going to cross to Scandinavia or head straight down to Bulgaria. Just this morning I had an offer of a Workaway experience in Bulgaria. It could not be as bad as my last one in France. It’s times like these I wish I was a good cook!</p><p id="afba">The Eurail pass means I don’t have to plan everything down to the last detail. I’m more confident to fly by the seat of my pants this trip. You never know I might meet a handsome man in Paris and spend the next few months there! Yeah, I'm not counting on it.</p><p id="fe82"><b><i>This will probably be my last trip to Europe so if you know of somewhere off the beaten track that you will know I will love, please write about it and tag me. Europe 2023 — Getting Excited

This trip is going to be like no other

I had roughly planned an itinerary way back in June last year. My plan was to buy a Eurail 2-month pass with a maximum of 15 travelling days. But I saw a 10% special for a 3-month unlimited pass for $801 so jumped on board. It allows me more flexibility.

I’m hoping it includes travel in Great Britain in which case I’ll start the pass in London. After my first night in a cheap Heathrow hotel, I’m going to spend a few days exploring the Peak District, Hardwick Hall, Chesterfield, Nottingham, Chatsworth House, the church with the crooked steeple and a few of the villages in the area. I’m staying with a friend whom I only met on my last trip. We had such a lovely time exploring Kent where she was living in 2019 that she’s been asking when I am coming again. I’m really looking forward to this first part of my trip.

After reading some Globetrotters’ stories from Scotland, I might mosey along further north and west. I haven’t set foot in Scotland since 2006. Even then I only visited Edinburgh where it rained the entire time and a couple of days in a little village called Clachan where I was propositioned by a Scottish sheep farmer named Hugh. He did buy me single malt scotch all evening so it wasn’t a complete loss. Clachan Inn is reportedly the oldest inn in Scotland. I’m not sure of the veracity of that but I can tell you it was old. The next evening, the barmaid recognised me and whispered to me Hugh hasn’t had a woman in a while — his sheep keep him company — well she didn’t quite use those pretty words if you know what I mean. I ate haggis for the first time and loved it! Ordered it every night I was in Scotland. The haggis might be the tipping point to tempt me to another visit. Also, my great grandfather was Scottish — Duncan McNaughton Beaumont.

Then I’m going to catch the Eurostar to Paris. I was thinking I’d start my trip in Ghent but by the time I get back to Paris in December, Monet’s Gardens will be closed for winter. I’ve missed out on everything I want to do in Paris on a couple of previous trips by leaving it until last!
