Eugenia is Not the Only One Who Likes to Play with Water Droplets

A sparrow at the fountain

We have a little female hummingbird, named Eugenia, who loves to play with the water droplets in our fountain. She splashes around and has no fear of “Big Red,” the dominant male because he spends most of his time chasing away the boys. You can read her story here.

She’s quite an adorable little bird.

But we also have many other birds who frequent the fountain, including this little sparrow, who was taking a dip the other evening when I happened to have my camera in hand.

Unbeknownst to me, until I looked up what type of sparrow she was, there are at least seventeen types of sparrows! This little girl, though, is a Song Sparrow.

These little birds can be identified by their coarse streaks, dark on back and light underneath, with streaks on its sides that join to form a central breast spot. Its crown is brown with a narrow stripe, and they have a broader grayish stripe over each eye.

They love to eat seeds which have fallen from the feeder and I often see them hopping about on the ground, munching away.

But, on this day, her belly was full and she was just interested in playing with the water droplets.
