Summary

The website content reflects a personal narrative about the transition from summer to Christmas, as observed through nature and neighborhood features, with a focus on the beauty of flowers, the joy of seasonal changes, and community engagement through photography and art.

Abstract

The author, Susan Alison, shares a personal essay detailing the juxtaposition of summer and Christmas themes in her neighborhood, symbolized by scarlet geraniums and a pine cone. Accompanied by her dog, PupperJack, she contemplates the changing seasons and the anticipation of Christmas decorations. The narrative includes vivid descriptions of white roses, Japanese anemones, and a mysterious blackboard with an optimistic message. Susan and PupperJack humorously misidentify a stone sculpture before recognizing it as an elephant. The piece also touches on the significance of sunflowers, Ukraine's national flower, and their representation of peace. The essay concludes with a community-driven Photo-a-Day Challenge and a call to plant more sunflowers, alongside links to the author's other works and her presence on various platforms.

End of Summer — Ooh! It Must be Nearly Christmas!

Symbolised by scarlet geraniums and a pine cone

This little encapsulation of seasons was totally like that when PupperJack and I spotted it on our amble this week. Summer and Christmas juxtaposed.

We ambled off home wondering when we could get out the decorations and sparkly lights …

On the way home, we saw these white roses — they look creamy in the photo, but in real life, they looked so white they were blinding in the sun.

Japanese anemones are considered by some to be a bit of a nuisance, but I like to see great banks of them around the neighbourhood — both the pink and the white.

There are more features of varying flavours appearing in the neighbourhood. Above is a blackboard on someone’s fence. I’m not awfully certain what its purpose is, but it does say ‘It’s a new dawn’ on it, so that’s good enough for me.

And I’ve seen some door wreaths recently — above middle pic being one of them. They’re not Christmas wreaths or autumn wreaths — they’re just door wreaths. Fab!

Then we saw this lump of stone near someone’s front door and PupperJack and I stared at it for a very long time … Until realisation dawned …

It’s an elephant! Of course it is.

Well — we think it is. We think it’s an elephant.

What do you reckon, PupperJack?

PJ: Um. Yeah. Of course, it’s an elephant.

To welcome September, here is the first verse of ‘An Ode to the Kansas Sunflower’ by Ed Blair

“Oh sunflower! The queen of all flowers, No other with you can compare, The roadside and fields are made golden Because of your bright presence there. Above all the weeds that surround you You raise to the sun your bright head, Embroidering beautiful landscapes Your absence would leave brown and dead.”

Sunflowers are Ukraine’s national flower. In folk imagery, they represent the warmth and power of the sun, and throughout history, this flower has been used as a symbol of peace.

We need to plant more sunflowers.
