Embracing Self-Care: Prioritizing Health Over Work

Today, I did something I rarely do: I called out sick from work. Years of being taught that hard work pays off and the guilt of letting others down led me to accumulate over 800 hours of sick pay. This doesn’t include any Personal Time Off (PTO) I also have. Even after amassing so many sick days, and despite feeling unwell this morning, I still felt the need to convince myself to go into work.
Then, I remembered what I wrote in my New Year’s resolutions:
“Let’s make it about love and kindness. Let’s choose to focus on mental wellness and positive emotional health. We have the power to make a difference, one act of kindness at a time.”

I realized I can’t preach this message unless I’m fulfilling it too. So, today, I let go of the built-in guilt that corporate America often instills in us, making us feel beholden to our jobs. I started fulfilling my own needs, beginning with my health.
The whole point of me writing this is to remind others to focus on what matters in life. For me it’s my family, work is just a way to help provide for them but its not my identity. Remember to take care of your self, there's only one of you. Love Forward.

Since I had the day off, I decided to channel my energy into something creative while I recover, hoping to ignite a spark of positive imagination. Below is Art I created using Midjourney. I hope ya’ll enjoy.
