Embracing Retirement-Writing Keeps Your Mind Sharp
Volume 9-Writing is a Great Activity for Seniors
Welcome back once again to my popular series on embracing retirement. My goal with these articles is to help people get the most from their well deserved retirement. If you are reading this article, you are most likely also writing here on Medium. Turns out the activity of writing has many benefits, especially for seniors. Let’s take a closer look.
You can now listen to my articles:
As a retiree, are you concerned that since you no longer have the mental stimulation that a full time job provided, you will decline mentally? If so, writing is the golden ticket.
Writing Is a Sport For the Brain
According to many sources, writing is good for the brain. While writing, many areas of the brain are active and it helps to maintain and build new connections. It requires a lot of brainpower and can definitely help with memory and retention. It may also help to ward off or at least slow down dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Writing Reduces Stress and Anxiety
Even though we are retired, there still is stress in our lives. Aging brings with it a whole new set of stressors. When you are writing, similar to reading, your focus shifts away from your worries and helps to relax you. I find writing very relaxing. Also, if you choose to write about your problems or issues, it will make you feel better to express tour feelings. Similar to talking about your problems.
A Great Activity Even For Those With Mobility Issues
We all know exercise is good for us. As we age it becomes more difficult for some as we have aches and pains and mobility issues. Writing, however, can be done in almost any situation and can bring joy to those who find it difficult to get out and about. It gives you something to look forward to and takes your mind off your worries.
Allows You to Interact With People
Writing also allows you to form new relationships, especially on Medium. You can follow your favorite writers and get feedback on your own articles. I find most people on Medium to be very friendly and helpful to new writers. It takes a while to learn any writing platform, which in itself is good for you. Anytime you’re learning new things it is good for the brain.
What to Write About?
If you’re thinking of joining Medium, already have, or belong to another writing platform or even self-publish, do you worry about what you will write about? You’re not alone, but not to worry. I myself at times think I am running out of topics to write about, but I always seem to come up with something. Of course, if you have a lot of hobbies and interests, you already have many experiences to write about.
Also, writing about your feelings, opinions, relationships and life experiences is usually well received by readers. Then there is fiction, the possibilities are endless. Finally, poetry is also highly regarded on Medium.
Don’t Get Frustrated
If you’re struggling with writing for one reason or another, just relax. Take a break for a few days. The ideas will flow eventually and you’ll be back in the game. Don’t get too caught up in the stats, although I will admit at times I have. Remember, it is a hobby, so take your time and enjoy. You are retired!
Conclusion
I highly recommend writing to retirees, or even if you are still working. It has so many benefits. You can’t go wrong.
