The present moment is truly a gift

Do you know, why you always feel stressed & exhausted? Do you think that, it would have been great if you had a button for your mind that you could turn ON/OFF as needed to save yourself from continuous thinking and chattering? Do you feel like you need freedom from your mind?

If any of the questions is relatable to you then you are at the right place. This story can help you bring peace to your mind and help you be in the present moment.

I know, it is very hard to be in the present moment. I try to practice it daily. On days when I able to be in the present moment for long enough, I feel so peaceful, and total in control. These has even helped me keep my stress level down which in turn helping reduce my migraine issue. I have discover some great method to implement it, that I am going to share with you here in this story.

Being in the present moment is difficult

Have you ever tried to be in the present moment? If not then (even if you tried it earlier, give it a try now), try now to be in the present moment for 30 seconds (Yes, stop reading this story, and try being in the present moment).

Pause…Pause…Pause … for the present moment at least for 30 secs.

How was it?

Let me tell you, it was soothing but difficult to continue for 30 seconds. Right?

Why be in the present moment is soothing?

Because in the present moment, you are neither thinking about the past nor regretting it. Nor you are worried about future events. You are just being in the present moment. And the present is peace, freedom, and without fear. Read more about it in the book summary The Present — By Spencer Johnson: Book Summary.

How can you be in the present moment (even if it is difficult)?

You already tried to be in the present moment at the very start of this story and found out that it is not an easy task to be in the present moment. Because though you want to be in the present moment, your mind keeps on jumping on different thoughts.

However, there are some methods that can help you be in the present moment. (I practiced all these methods by myself and found it very effective for my mental and physical health).

1. Meditation:

It is the best way to keep yourself in the present moment for a while. Meditation is about focusing your mind and energies in to one thing so your mind won’t wander on something else. In meditation, people mainly focus on their breathing. Thoughts will come and go but don’t indulge in them. Just let it come and go. You just observe them. Your full focus must be on your breathing. Even if you are able to do it for just 2 minutes, it will be so peaceful experience. Practice it regularly, you will surely improve in doing it.

2. Observe a nature:

Go for a walk in the garden, woods, or on your street. But neither bring your iPod or mobile phone with you nor walk with people who keep on talking to you while walking. Let yourself enjoy the solitude. This is the best time to enjoy nature too.

While you walk look around and observe nature, trees, leaves, flowers, tree branches, birds, birds’ nests on trees, insects, etc. While you observe nature, you will notice that you are no longer focusing on the past or future, but fully focused on the present moment.

If you can’t go for a walk then sit in a quiet place at your home or maybe at the bench in the park. But the same rule i.e. solitude. No phone, no music, and no people. Observe your surroundings. Try to listen to the sound of birds chirping. While doing this you are at the present moment.

3. Sit ideal and observe your breathing:

Sit quietly in one corner with the same rule i.e. solitude. Just try to focus on your breathing. Don’t try to change its pattern, but just observe your breathing. You can feel the present moment.

4. Read a book or do the activity that you like the most (maybe your hobby, but not watching TV or mobile):

This is the most passive way (can be done without much energy) to be in the present moment. Read a book or do the things that you like to do like your hobby. While you read you need proper attention. While reading you might not be thinking about the past or the future (if you are fully focused on it). That means you are in the present moment.

This is true for any other activity that you like the most, like music, dancing, cooking, baking, etc. So do the things that you enjoy doing and that in turn, will help you be in the present moment.

5. Be a gatekeeper of your thoughts:

Now this is quite tough. Without your awareness your mind keeps on thinking about past incidents, what people said to you, and what will you do about some or the other things in the future. Just one negative thought and you are on the fastest train of thought. But you have to control this fast train by being a gatekeeper of your mind. Have awareness in your mind to do this task.

Keep a close watch on your thinking process throughout your day. Try to be in the present moment, negative thoughts will come to trouble you, but as soon as you realize that you are on a negative thoughts train, stop it. And again be the gatekeeper of your thoughts, bring your mind to the present moment, and try to be there for at least 30 sec. Again when you realize you lost your track, bring back your mind to the present moment and keep on repeating the process.

Bonus Tip:

One of the reasons your mind can’t be in the present moment (and in chaos) is worries about pending or unfinished tasks on your plate. There are so many things running in your mind that needs your attention. Admit it, we as humans run on a limited capacity. When there are too many things pending/unfinished, the mind keeps on lingering on those tasks. So we get exhausted and feel overwhelmed.

Instead of feeling the pressure of too many things to be done, if you write it down on paper, it can help your mind calm down from the pressure of remembering and completing those tasks.

After writing down ‘things to be done(task)’ on paper you can have a clear idea of what are the things that need your attention. And you can prioritize these things and choose to start working on them.

To remove the tiniest chaos from your mind, decide the proper date, time and duration to do those pending tasks. And when the time comes start working on it. To have more control over the completion of these tasks, and to maintain its consistency do the proper tracking of these tasks.

To help you do the task management and it tracking, I have created Task Planner & Consistency Journal (it is FREE for a limited time!). It contains 5 FREE templates that can help you define all your pending tasks and help you plan the tasks further. It also has a template that can help you track the progress of the tasks to maintain its consistency.
