Eerie Expeditions: The Bellamy Bridge — Marianna, Florida

A spooky, swampy trail in Jackson County, Florida leads to the once stately Bellamy Bridge. This landmark is one of Florida’s oldest wooden bridges — its current iteration was built in 1914, replacing the previous bridge from 1840. However, what sets Bellamy Bridge apart from other historic sites is its reputation as one of the most haunted locations in the Sunshine State.
The tragic tale of Elizabeth Bellamy is a local legend. According to accounts, Elizabeth was a young bride who met her sorrowful end after her dress caught fire on her wedding night. Her groom, in his attempt to save her, pushed Elizabeth into the Chipola River, resulting in her untimely death.
Based on the photos I’ve seen of the area, the bridge is in a remote location, with no houses or structures nearby. I can’t help but wonder what this couple was doing wandering around in a murky swamp in the dark of night, and exactly how Elizabeth’s gown ignited. But alas, such seemingly relevant questions have never been answered.
Legend tells us that Elizabeth’s husband, Dr. Samuel Bellamy, never got over the tragedy of her death. He mourned her loss for the next fifteen years, before taking his own life on the day after Christmas. It’s said that his final wish was to be buried next to his wife; however, he was not allowed within the consecrated cemetery ground where she lay because he had committed suicide. Samuel was instead laid to rest miles away in Chattahoochee, Florida, in a grave whose location has sadly been forgotten.
Elizabeth’s spirit rested quietly until his passing. Then she began to search.
Visitors have reported eerie encounters and unexplained phenomena around the bridge and along the half mile path leading to it, dubbed the Bellamy Bridge Heritage Trail. Witnesses have described the apparition of a woman in a flowing white gown, sometimes accompanied by the faint scent of gardenias — a flower now associated with Elizabeth. Some claim to have heard disembodied whispers, while others report sudden drops in temperature and inexplicable gusts of wind as they travel along the path. Mysterious blue and white lights have also been seen floating along the trail.

Paranormal investigators have been drawn to the Bellamy Bridge, bringing along various tools to capture evidence of its ghostly guest. Electromagnetic field readings, audio recordings, and thermal imaging have all been used to detect the bridge’s spiritual visitor, and by all accounts, some of their findings are difficult to explain using conventional logic.
As the years pass, the legends surrounding the Bellamy Bridge continue to evolve, with new sightings and stories popping up constantly. Local historians work to preserve the historical significance, while supernatural enthusiasts and thrill-seekers embrace the chilling atmosphere surrounding it. The Bellamy Bridge Heritage Trail is a fun and informative spot for those who love a good (mostly) true ghost story.
Though it’s just over an hour away from my house, I’ve never visited the Bellamy Bridge…but I’m planning to take on the haunted hike this October! I’ll be writing an update afterwards, so please join my email list if you’d like to be notified about new posts! 👻😬
