Summary

The web content describes a "Musical Story Challenge" where participants are tasked with incorporating as many song titles from a single artist into a narrative, with the goal of achieving the highest density of references in the fewest words.

Abstract

The "Dylan Deluge" is a creative writing challenge inspired by the song titles of Bob Dylan. It invites readers to craft a story that weaves together numerous Dylan song titles, aiming for efficiency in the number of references per word. The article provides an example story that illustrates how one might blend titles like "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues," "The Man in the Long Black Coat," and "Desolation Row" into a cohesive narrative. The challenge also includes a scoring system, where participants divide the total word count of their story by the number of song title references to determine their rating. A humorous caveat excuses those averse to math from precise calculations, awarding them a perfect score and a blue ribbon. The article encourages participation by suggesting that writers publish their stories with the tag "Musical Story Challenge" and link back to the original prompt to foster a community of engaged writers.

  • The author appears to be a fan of Bob Dylan, using his song titles as a basis for a creative writing exercise.

  • The inclusion of a scoring system adds a competitive element to the challenge, while also providing a humorous exception for those who dislike math.
  • The article promotes a sense of community among writers by encouraging them to share their work and highlight the contributions of others.
  • The example story provided demonstrates the author's skill in creating a narrative that flows naturally despite the constraint of including multiple song titles.

A Musical Story Challenge

It was hard times on desolation row

these boots of Spanish leather had taken me 900 miles from home feelin’ like Jesse James I was lookin’ for Hazel but I ended up at Heaven's door. “Come all ye fair and tender ladies”, I cried as the door opened. Sarah Jane said, ”Well if it isn’t the man in the long black coat. Where are ya comin’ from?” “Oh, out on Hiway 61. Fightin’ for the Hurricane and fixin’ to die.” “Well,” she says, “Your sad-eyed lady has gone to Santa Fe. And it looks like a hard rain’s gonna fall and the levee’s gonna break. I’m headed up to the watchtower.” “Ahh, Guess I’ll grab a big yellow taxi and find my friend Mr. Tamborine Man. Then we’ll go find my girl from the North Country.” “Goodbye, Black Rider,” she said. “Via con Dios.”

We got out of town before the changing of the guards and headed down the highway like rolling stones.

Hope you enjoyed my story. If not, don’t think twice, it’s alright.

The idea of this challenge/prompt is to cram as many title references as possible into the fewest words and create a story. For those of you who are competitive, divide the total number of words in your story by the number of song titles to get your rating.

According to Michael Whalen, who received a score of 13.5 per reference, if you suck at math, or despise it, or both you automatically get a score of 100 and a blue ribbon.

My score = 176 words/26 song references = 6.76… which gets me a blue ribbon too.
