Dukkha or ‘suffering’ is to be found everywhere. Most often, it is caused not by an external event but is created in our own mind due to the response we have, which may be habitual, a learned process which we repeat without even thinking.

Why do we create our own suffering?

It’s a good question but we seem to do it over and over again. We just can’t let things go. Lord Buddha wanted us to see that it is most beneficial for us to ‘let go’ of everything. Not to cling or hold on to thoughts, feelings, emotions, memories — all the mental formations, both positive and negative, which come up when we are compelled to respond to people or things.

He also wanted us to relinquish material things including possessions, wealth, status even family as he did himself. After much contemplation he realised that it is our clinging attachment to our notion of self and the mistaken idea that all of these mental and material things belong to us which causes our suffering.

This is why he taught us The Four Noble Truths, which are, in simple terms, that:

  • there is suffering
  • there is a cause of suffering
  • there is a way out of suffering
  • there is a path which offers the way out of suffering

This is an easy to read, informative article if you would like to read and know some more about this topic:

May this teaching lead you to happiness; may it help you grow in truth. May you be freed from the suffering of birth and death.
