This doesn’t mean that we have to die or give up, quite the contrary. It is an invitation to abandon the endless cycles of the world (Samsara), get off the merry-go-round and make our own choices.

Just by stopping and taking a step back we can start to see more clearly what is really going on. If we take a pause and reflect or question ourselves: ‘What am I doing and why? We may come up with some interesting answers. Often when we analyse why we are doing something, we see that we are actually making excuses. Things become habit and we lose sight of our intended goal. Situations change. So, we can at least step back and press pause for a while but, for best results, it’s time to abandon the cart, choose to stop ‘making tracks’ and quietly walk away.

Searching for peace within the world, the cart wheel tracks stretch out endlessly behind you. As long as you follow the world there is no stopping, no rest. If you simply stop following it, the cart comes to rest, the wheels no longer turn. Following the world turns the wheels ceaselessly… there is no stopping. If you stop, there is stopping… — Ajahn Chah

May this teaching lead you to happiness; may it help you grow in truth. May you be freed from the suffering of birth and death.
