“I can do this.” you tell yourself as you wade out deeper into the river.
Dara gives you as much slack as you need, ceding the rope in her hands little by little. When your toes are barely touching the bottom of the river, you stop. You sink in deep and float forward with the current.
Within a few moments, the urge to take a breath becomes inescapable. You fight it, and though it’s painful at first, your body eventually gives up and you float along, filling your lungs with water.
You think about your family as you drift away…
