Don’t Slap Your Boss
Or How to Get a Great Start in Corporate America

“Sharks don’t eat fish because of anything the fish do. They don’t eat fish because those fish aren’t good enough fish, or because those fish aren’t nice enough to the sharks. Sharks eat fish because they are sharks.” ― Drenda Keese
I’m lucky; I have escaped the craziness of corporate America, but I still have friends inside and young women I mentor. One of these women called me the other day to say she had an unreasonable desire to slap her boss. When I asked why, she told me he insists on calling weekly in-person staff meetings in the middle of a pandemic for no reason she can identify. Since she and I have a financial relationship, i.e., it costs her to discuss issues with me… I asked why she called me.
She already knew cuffing your boss could be criminal assault. Hitting a person could cause medical harm. Such behavior may precipitate legal action. Oh, yea, it would be fatal to her career. She answered that our call was money well spent. Being frustrated with her management was affecting her performance. She felt I would understand why she wanted to strike him, but would counsel her not to. She was right. I told her not to whack him and to look for another position, internally or externally. She needed to get away from his infuriating behavior.
If you work in corporate America long enough and interface with enough people, you will have the urge to assault a colleague; never act on the desire no matter how stupid or crazy the actions. We don’t fight our work associates in America. Smacking someone will not be conducive to you getting that next promotion.
