Don’t Let Fear Devour You
Five Steps to help yourself when you need it most.
When you’re afraid of something, it can be hard to stay positive and focus on your strengths, but by being creative, you can take control of your fears and face them head-on. Instead of flailing wildly, you can stay calm, cool and collected, allowing yourself the shine instead of shrinking.
How?
1. Know your fear(s)
This is probably the hardest part, but it can be helpful to name your fear(s). By understanding what it is that makes you scared, you can allow yourself time to consider what you’ll need when faced with that fear. The most important thing to remember here is, don’t beat yourself up. You have the right to feel the way you feel and the point here is not to condemn yourself, but to empower. Knowing your weaknesses is the first step to overcoming them.
2. Create a plan
If you’re afraid of something, it’s important to have a plan in place in case of an emergency. This could include having a friend or family member you can rely on, having a safe word or signal if you’re in a dangerous situation, or having money saved up in case you need to leave town quickly. Taking the time now to think through some avenues to walk when darkness looms overhead will help you stay in control and feel more secure.
3. Give Yourself Grace
The best way to overcome a fear is to face it head-on, but this doesn’t mean doing something dangerous or reckless. Take small steps to gradually get closer to what scares you because only then can you move beyond it. If you back up or stop because your first attempt fails, give yourself the grace to try again.
4. Use your imagination
Your imagination can be a powerful tool when it comes to facing fears. Thinking through all the ‘what ifs’ can help you understand how you might react and what you’ll need to do when faced with something that really undoes you. By visualizing yourself successfully facing that fear or navigating the situation, you empower yourself. You give yourself the opportunity to grow beyond that fear and open the future to new possibilities.
5. List Your Strengths
Taking control of your fears by thinking them through and planning for uncertainties can help to reduce the anxiety you feel when facing those issues. By planning ahead, you put yourself in control of the situation, rather than allowing the fear to control you or hold you back. Another way to take control of the situation is to focus on what makes you strong. List your strengths and keep this list within sight. It may seem silly, but by reminding yourself of what makes you strong will increase your confidence and serve as motivation for dealing with anything life throws at you in the future.
Summation
Fear is a natural part of life and it’s meant to keep us safe, but knowing how to navigate frightening situations is just as important and will keep us equally as safe. By making a plan and through understanding both our weaknesses and strengths, we can creatively solve problems and face our fears with confidence.
