Does Writing About Sex Really Make Medium Success Come Easy?
Let's recap my sexual side.

Every now and then, somebody comments to say that I must be writing about sex for the claps. Because, you know, that's a thing. Apparently.
In case you missed it, sex sells. And it sells so well that it can make you a Medium superstar overnight because it's pretty much the blogger version of "sleeping your way to the top."
Hey, I jest, but I suspect that you get what I'm saying. In 2019, plenty of folks still consider writing about sex as some sort of low brow profession.
That's right, there are still pearls to be clutched and some serious side eye to be given.
But to answer this question about whether I've been successful on Medium because I write about sex, I thought it would be fun to browse my stories with more than 500 fans.
Are they mostly all about sex?
Let's see:
#1: 1.2K fans
Okay, so my "top" story is currently about sex. You caught me. But to be fair, it's got nearly 90K views too. Those 1,200+fans are a drop in the bucket of everyone who's seen the story. So, maybe sex doesn't sell so... hard?
#2: 1K fans
This one isn't so much about sex as it is about religion and spiritual abuse. Honestly, it's more about forced abstinence due to the medical condition called vaginismus.
#3: 883 fans
Well, this is definitely feminist. But no, it's not about sex.
#4: 880 fans
Oops! No sex here. Not a lick. Have I missed some golden opportunity?
#5: 810 fans
No sex here either. Hmmm, maybe I'm not the peddler of debauchery those commenters called me.
#6: 760 fans
Well, this one's pretty rough as it was my first member feature before Medium began editing those picks, but again, it's really not about sex. Sorry.
#7: 735 fans
So yeah, this one's definitely about sex. But it was also inspired by some Q&As on the Planned Parenthood website. Meaning? It's meant to be educational.
#8: 727 fans
Naw, this one's not about sex, but a certain fellow writer who doesn't like me did crack some jokes about my weight on Twitter and then tried to defend her humor by complaining that I write too much about being fat. So... sorry, not sorry but fat is not some magical topic on Medium. It's just real life.
#9: 715 fans
Funny story. I actually wrote this piece as a precursor to that #1 story about the threesome. Both pieces hit the popular on Medium section within a week of each other. So, maybe sex sells. Or maybe my experiences are just kinda... relatable?
#10: 685 fans
Nothing sexy here, folks!
Out of my top 10 stories, three are definitely about sex. But remember, I write a lot. So, I've actually got 22 stories on Medium with more than 500 fans. How many of those are about sex?
Four.
That's right, I could list my next 12 stories after the Top 10 and only one of those stories are solidly about sex. The other stories are about family, mental health, women's issues, personal development, writing, and relationships... but not sex.
I'm not sure if you're supposed to be relieved or disappointed, but to me it just kind of is what it is. You know?
I write about the issues that matter to me, and sometimes, that's sex. I am genuinely unashamed of that, but I also know that when I do write about sex it's not some tasteless marketing ploy.
It's just me.
But let's get real. I do write frequently about sex, or at least, whenever I'm in the mood. And I've got 76 stories here with more than 300 fans. And do you know what?
A lot of those are about sex. In fact, 19 of those 76 stories are about sex.
If anything, my success on Medium should tell you that you don't need to pigeonhole yourself into one topic. You don't even need to hit hot buttons all the damn time.
But it pays to give a crap and have some real passion for the topics you choose. Consider your work on Medium as your personal portfolio. It ought to reflect the type of writer you are, the writer you are becoming, and the writer you wish to be.
If you want to write about sex all of the time, do that.
But if you don't want to write about sex? Quit calling it easy money.
The reality is that sex stories might get you more views, and possibly even more reads. But the ratio of fans tends to be pretty low on most sex stories when compared to those reads. And if you want to make money on Medium, you've got to get fans because you don't get paid for views or reads aside from those clapping readers.
Whatever you choose to write about, believe in its value. Believe in your value. Sex sells but relatability and readability are the real superpowers you want to hone here.
