Does Anybody Remember Laughter?

Led Zeppelin’s rhetorical question today seems more important than ever in today’s uptight, upright society

Robert Plant, the lead singer for Led Zeppelin, had a good point about laughter. It seems to be in short supply in the landscape of today’s America. Laughter seems to have been replaced by ultra-serious, sober-sided partisans on both sides of the political and personal spectrum.

Whatever happened to just kicking back and enjoying ourselves? What is the problem with these people who can’t crack a smile, let alone laugh together and make a personal connection? Just simply share with another human being a laugh about the absurdity of the human condition.

I’m talking about people who are so strung out and wrapped up in their personal political beliefs that they leave no room for compromise, no possibility of reconciliation, and no idea what live and let live really means.

I mean really, does everything have to be that serious? Does everything in life, especially politics, have to be laced with the poison pills of hatred, discrimination, and intolerance?

It seems nobody can trust anybody anymore, about anything. It seems that we as a society are becoming increasingly adrift in a sea of doubt, uncertainty, and mistrust.

This is especially true in the arena of politics, but it is now spilling over into our everyday relationships, especially our romantic liaisons.

Our modern-day relationships are fraught with doubt, fear, and anxiety. Yes, people can and do still hook up with whoever looks good to them via social media for a quick fix. But there is an increasing tendency to keep our guard up all the time.

We can have physical closeness with one another without emotional intimacy, without trust, without any meeting of the minds that lead to anything real or long-lasting.

Anything of true value is worth exploring in depth, especially in a romantic relationship. But to do that, you have to trust the person you are with. You need to be relaxed enough to trust someone, to not be on guard all the time because everything is not perfect about them.

To not worry about being the one who gets burned.

Nothing in life is perfect, especially in our personal relationships. There is an old saying that sums it up best. Laughter is the best medicine. Why is that? Doctors and relationship experts can agree on some things.

  1. Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, our natural feel-good tendencies.
  2. Endorphins lead to a sense of well-being.
  3. The good feelings we get from smiling or laughter can actually promote and maintain immune tolerance.
  4. Laughter is a positive emotion that builds resiliency and increases creative thinking.
  5. The laughter that endorphins generate increases subjective well-being and life satisfaction in general.

Happy people cannot help but laugh and relax, which is probably the best recipe for getting close to one another.

Everything in life does not have to be taken so seriously, everything in life is not doomed to fail or end up in disaster. Why can’t we all just take a chill pill and let things flow?

We all need more laughter in our lives. We need to be spontaneous and not so uptight and guarded all the time.

And we all need to remember that life is short, and time is fleeting. Life can be hard at times, but try not to make it any harder than it already is.

Robert Plant was right. Whatever happened to laughter?
