Today Was A Beautiful Day

Sometimes, It’s Good To Just Count Our Blessings

Today was a beautiful day in San Francisco where I live. The sun was shining, the air was clear, and the skies were blue. I woke up, which is always a plus, felt well rested and filled with energy and enthusiasm for the day ahead. I decided to just count my blessings and be content with what I have and ignore, just for a while, all that I don’t have.

I have good health and no known physical ailments, no overwhelming, crushing bills I can’t deal with right now, and nobody out to get me. (That I know of!) This is not to say that I am impervious to harm, bulletproof or that I won’t have any or all of these problems tomorrow or the next day.

But I just needed to take one day off to relax and not worry about anything, because today, this one day at least, I just wanted to kick back and recharge my mental batteries. Call it a mental health day.

I think everybody could benefit from a day off just to relax, to meditate, to play music, to write, to work in the garden, to play with their dogs or cats, to appreciate loved ones. To just spend time, our most precious commodity, with our significant others, and/or our children without any sense of nagging guilt that they should be doing more.

Some people are truly blessed, and they have incorporated this mindset into their daily lives, and my hat’s off to them. Congratulations! I wish them all well. They are serene and self-confident because they are living their inner life and counting their blessings daily.

Philosophers and wise men all over the world, all through the centuries have advocated this approach to life. So many of them, widely scattered by time and distance, living in distant centuries, in times gone by, and in widely scattered different countries all over the world have come to the same basic conclusions.

They could be Eastern philosophers like Buddha, Lao Tzu, or Confucious. They could be western philosophers like the Greek triumvirate of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.

All of them had beliefs, thoughts, and feelings on the importance of justice, good, and a simpler way of life. They all agree on the importance of these values and concentrate on how to implement them in their daily lives.

To me, the most important thing we have in this life is time. We all are allocated a certain amount of years to live our lives, achieve our goals, and make a difference for the better. Some people choose to squander their time on frivolous pursuits or in the worst case, to pursue evil as a goal.

Some people just don’t get it, and some people simply don’t care. I wonder about these kinds of people, but I can only choose to live my own life, on my own terms, for as long as my health allows, as long as my life keeps unrolling like a tapestry before my very eyes.

I can see where I was through my memory, but I cannot see the future through the mists of time. Maybe it’s better that way. Maybe it’s because we were meant to live life one day at a time.

Things happen in life, good and bad, but hopefully, the good times will outnumber the bad times for most people. Trauma, abuse, and mental and physical illness are all part of all of our lives, one way or the other, and we all should do our best to help people who are overwhelmed by life’s challenges as best we can.

Those that are able to live their own inner lives every day are lucky. Most people can’t do it because of the intrusion of reality and their inner compulsion to take action.

But all of us can at least take off one day, every now and then, to contemplate where we came from, where we are now, and where we are going.

We owe it to ourselves, and we owe it to others.
