Titles.

Just seeing that word can send a writer into a brain freeze.

We writers know too well how crucial titles are. We live and die by them.

That’s why I’m sharing these free online tools with you. They’re called “title analyzers.” They use several metrics to assign your title a numerical score.

The Online Title Analyzers I Use

There are a lot of good free title analyzers out there. Here are my go to’s:

  1. WPBeginner (https://www.wpbeginner.com/tools/headline-analyzer-tool/).
  2. Sharethrough (https://headlines.sharethrough.com/).
  3. Capitalize My Title (https://capitalizemytitle.com/headline-analyzer/).

How I use these tools

Crafting a title is paramount. Carl Jeffers says that 25% of your writing time should be taken up writing your title.

So with that in mind, when I’m starting a piece, I will:

  • open up these tools;
  • plug in various title iterations till I arrive at the one that scores highest.

The higher the score, the better. Generally speaking, you want to shoot for 70 and above at all times.

How I arrived at the title for this post

For this post, I kept tweaking the title on WPBeginner till I got what I wanted. Here are the iterations I went through (with scores in parentheses):

  • Do You Want Story Titles With a Hook? Try These Three Tools. (69)
  • Do You Want Killer Story Titles? Try These Three Free Online Tools. (76)
  • Do You Want Killer Story Titles? Try These Three Free Tools. (79)
  • Do You Want Killer Story Titles? Try These Free Tools. (93)
  • Do You Want Killer Story Titles? Then Try These Three Tools. (72)

Here’s the screenshot with these results:

I’ll then plug these various iterations into the other tools and see if they give similar results.

For this piece, I settled on the eventual title even though Sharethrough and Capitalize My Title gave it lower scores (67 and 71) than WPBeginner (93).

The beauty of these tools

I love these tools because they take away a lot of title guesswork.

And…I love these tools because of the lessons they teach me. Notice how my score went up 14 points when I dropped the word “three”…and then plummeted 21 points when I tried to get cute by adding “then.”
