Do You Want Clean, Natural Wine That’s Keto-Friendly?

5 places to buy sugar-free, natural wine online

Photo by Kelsey Knight on Unsplash

Whether you’re looking for a sugar-free or keto-friendly alcoholic drink, or you just want a pure, clean-tasting wine, natural wine has much to offer.

Natural wine is basically just fermented grape juice that is made with organic grapes.

I say basically, because there isn’t an agreed-upon industry-wide or regulatory definition of natural wine.

What is natural wine?

But essentially, natural wine is wine that is produced without pesticides, chemicals or additives (although some natural winemakers do add small amounts of sulfites as a preservative).

This not only produces a cleaner-tasting wine, in my opinion, it also makes natural wine suitable for all kinds of diets and lifestyles.

For example, conventional wines can be made with up to 60 approved additives, and those additives don’t have to be disclosed on the bottle. So, for example, if egg whites are added to wine to clarify it, it would be unsuitable for vegans, but they may not realize what they’re drinking.

Until recently, it wasn’t easy to get natural wines. You couldn’t just go to your local beer and wine store and ask for the natural wine or sugar-free wine section. You had to join a subscription service, like Dry Farm Wines, or travel to places where natural wine farming was popular.

Not so anymore.

Today, it’s possible to buy natural wines of all kinds and price points online.

Here are five of my favorite places to buy natural wine:

MYSA Natural Wine

Though MYSA bills itself as a wine club, you don’t have to commit to a subscription. You can buy individual wines if you prefer.

The site is a pleasure to navigate, as it doesn’t just break out wines by type or region, but also by occasion, food pairing, price and more.

And because natural wines have the (undeserved) reputation of tasting funky (they don’t; they are just as varied as conventional wines), you can mouse over each wine and see a quick barometer of where the wine falls on the funky v. classic scale.

This is a great place to buy wine if you enjoy learning about how your wine is made (there are details about farming methods for each wine) as well as exactly what is and isn’t in your wine. It’s also the only site I’ve found that lists how many sulfites an individual wine contains.

Wonderful Wine Company

While wine connoisseurs shop for wines based on things like viscosity, mouth feel and other tasting notes, people who are health-conscious and just like to drink wine may shop a little differently. If you fall into the latter group, the Wonderful Wine Company is for you.

This company makes wines that are farmed without pesticides and are naturally low in carbs and sugar. The wines are keto-friendly, paleo-friendly, vegan, low-sulfite, low-sugar, organic and sustainable.

You can buy Winc wines by varietal in packs of three, six or twelve. And you’ll get the sugar content, carbohydrate content, calories and alcohol percentage for each.

Martha Stoumen Wines

This winery features wines that are “farmed with patience in mind.” The wines are made without insecticides or synthetic fertilizers and minimal intervention during the winemaking process. Prices range from around $26 to $40 a bottle.

Get Wines

Though this site sells mostly conventional wines, it does have a nice section of organic, green and sustainable wines. If you’re looking for a particular wine, this is a good site to check. It provides pairing suggestions as well as ratings and information about the producers.

Vivino

Vivino isn’t a vineyard or wine store, it’s essentially a marketplace that aggregates wines from sellers all over the world. So if you put wines from three different sellers in your cart, you will have to check out three times.

At the same time, if you’re buying a wine from one seller, it will suggest other wines from that same seller that you might want to try, so you can limit shipping fees.

The site is helpful because it offers detailed reviews of each wine, so you can read what real customers — not wine experts — have to say.

My experience with a particular sparkling wine it a good example of when this comes in handy. I should have heeded the warning from reviewers who described it as “on the sweeter side.” I thought it was like drinking Kool-Aid. I learned my lesson, and I continue to use Vivino when I know exactly which natural wine I want to buy.
