Do You Need Ko-Fi? Are You Thirsty?

Ko-fi or not Ko-fi — that is the question

Photo by Tyler Nix on Unsplash

Well, OK, it’s not the question.

What is Ko-fi?

Ko-Fi is a website that allows anyone to show their appreciation for your work, either via paying a tip (the price of a cup of coffee) and also as a marketplace to sell your wares.

I’ve had a Ko-Fi account for some time, and through the footer of every story ask for a coffee (you’ll see it right down at the bottom of this story too). Needless to say, there’s been little success.

In fact, I’ve yet to hear about anyone who has made money there.

Indeed, all I read about is those who are having mediocre success.

So, how can we see that Ko-Fi is the right place?

Does anyone actually buy anyone else a Ko-Fi?

I decided I’d try and encourage more by appealing to the charitable nature of others, and I said I would donate 20% of anything earned to Cancer Research UK.

I was lucky in that, one day, my cousin bought me 5 coffees. It was very generous, and I made the said donation, as promised.

I’m on the free plan. I don’t need anything more.

Maybe, just maybe, I’m jealous! Haha!!

There must be people making something from it, and I know it doesn’t happen overnight.

So I should get down from my high horse and focus and give it time.

The Shopping Channel

I recently thought I’d have a go at opening a shop on Ko-Fi, as another avenue to promote my Productivity Playbook.

It’s early days, but I’ll bet there will be few takers there too!

I’ve done the same on Gumroad, which you can read about below.

I know you have to be “in it to win it”, but where is the evidence that these gig-style sites actually do work?

The only place I’ve had a modicum of, financial, success is right here on Medium.

A place that “rewards for reads”. I should copyright that phrase.

I love you lot.

Medium has provided an environment that is not elitist, where anyone can have a go and start to make something. Or not.

It’s entirely your choice.

I would love to know if it’s just me that is missing the mark with being bought a coffee?

As I mentioned above, in tandem with Ko-Fi, I also created a store on Gumroad, which has already had some success (I sold one!)

I use Twitter all the time for promoting my stories. I recently came across this story from from Scout Dawson about using Twitter the right way. Check it out.
