Summary

The web content reflects on the transformative effect of snow on mood, texture, and perception, drawing parallels with the power of mood boards to influence our environment and consciousness.

Abstract

The article discusses the impact of snow on the landscape and emotions, using the concept of a mood board from the author's art and design studies to illustrate how different elements can evoke specific feelings. Snow is described as a natural mood board that alters the environment, creating a sense of renewal and freshness. The author reminisces about their mother's habit of redecorating to invite new feelings into their living space, suggesting that our surroundings significantly affect our mental state. The text also touches on the idea that focused thought, akin to what a mood board represents, can manifest into reality. The article is part of a series of reflections inspired by a prompt from Dr. Preeti Singh and includes references to other Medium articles on the theme of snow.

RECIPROCAL NATURE PROMPT – 2ND WEEK OF JANUARY

Do you know the Snow Changes Everything?

Weather – UK – Mood – Texture

When studying for my art and design A Level, we were given a project which required a mood board. There was no snow in the project, but for some reason, it is what comes to mind as I write this story. On this board, you attach all things that give you a particular mood you wish to create in your painting. You end up with colours, textures, sticks from trees, leaves, that sort of thing.

But what has this got to do with snow? Only the snow, being so full of different designs of invisible snowflakes, and being textured suggests a mood, and changes everything.

Take today for example. Cold, windy, dark, dismal, moody. It has rained in the UK for several days. Imagine instead, crisp, white snow. How different everything would look, and feel.

The snow reflects the light and casts a glow over everything, wrapping it in a blanket. You can take new steps in the snow. It is as though everything is created anew. The cold air feels fresh and inviting.

What a change new textures can bring to everything. Maybe that is the reason we decorate.

This thinking about snow has reminded me of how my Mother used to decorate regularly, changing the colours of the rooms in our living space, or the wallpaper; redesigning our space, and inviting in new and fresh feelings.

Another use for mood boards is for those of us who believe the mind is strong enough to manifest what we think about. A mood board can bring what we place on it into our conscious awareness. We might place a photograph of something we like, and the next day find that very thing in our periphery like magic.

This week’s snow prompt inspired me to think about textures. I enjoy the prompts on ‘Reciprocal’ because they evoke particular moods in me.

With thanks to Dr. Preeti Singh for the prompt:
