Do you find Medium depressing

how can we write more uplifting stories?

I look around on Medium. I see articles on the death of someone, their murder, their relationships which went horribly wrong. I see articles on how people disappeared and were never seen again, made more harrowing when they concern a young child. I see articles on death, suicide, our inhumanity to one another, our failings to one another. I see articles that glorify sex, violence, drugs. I see articles on so many negative things. Some are horrific. Some even soul destroying. I understand why people write them, mainly as others want to read them. There is an old saying that “good news doesn’t sell newspapers” and I am sure that still applies in this virtual world.

I guess for me I find it all dark and depressing, gloomy and morbid. Yes it is a reality that these things have happened in the past, are happening in the present and no doubt will happen in the future, but does dwelling on them make the likelihood of them happening again more probable? I know there are many studies that point to the perpetrators of such hideous crimes having studied, read or absorbed information on those who had committed similar atrocities in the past. Some even become obsessed with those people and want to emulate them.

Can we stop this? Realistically no, but I like to think that surrounding people with information on positivity, self-awareness, self-belief, emotional awareness, will help. Our young people are crying out to find themselves and establish themselves in the current world. How do we help them? What will history say about us? No I am not deluded and I know that the world is not all sugar canes and fairy dust, but we need to start somewhere, make a difference one small step at a time.

It of course starts with ourselves. How much are you learning about yourself each day? I don’t mean in some glib way, but on a much deeper level. How are you really feeling, what makes. you positive about yourself and what doesn’t? Do you life affirming choices to make, difficult though they may be?

This maybe your “road less travelled by”, overgrown and full of brambles and long grass, but you know you have to take it, as at the end of that road, when all the work is done, you know you will end up somewhere far better. Being true to yourself, taking the first step on the road, is maybe surrounding yourself by positive and affirming articles on here. Find the articles that are life affirming and not depressing. Find the light, not the darkness.
