Ever wear an attire that’s not your usual wardrobe? Tried something at work that’s not your area of expertise?
Experiments.
Food, drinks, clothing, movies, music, books, writing, hair-do, strategy, marketing, etc. — we have so many avenues where we have a chance to experiment.
Most of us are afraid to do so, with a fear of being judged — if not by others, by ourselves. I have been a victim of this thinking for many years — tied down with my perfectionism.
And yet, we envy people who are able to do this effortlessly. We probably judge them, but also admire them secretly — fantasizing us in their place.
It’s not my cup of tea.
We all are quick to dodge and escape from situations and activities we suck at.
Dance does it for me every time unless I’m a bit drunk and don’t care anymore 😂. And guess what — I have seen videos of me doing some dance steps and it was not all that bad.
Here’s some stuff that’s not my cup of tea (when sober):
Adventure sports
Some types of cuisine
Halloween costume
International music
Type of alcohol
Hair-style
Accessories
Reality TV shows
.. and dancing
My Take on Experiments
Not so long ago, “writing” would have featured in the above list.
What I realized lately is that experimenting with something does not mean doing it with perfection.
I have started getting a kick out of having a lot of first experiences. It may be good or bad, but it will always be special. The thrill, the mystery of what feeling you might discover is hard to explain.
Sometimes, you might end up finding something that becomes part of you for life — writing may be one such thing for me. At other times, you may find a creative and “out-of-the-box” solution to something you could not solve with conventional methods.
In my opinion, experimenting with something is inevitable. What is in your control is to make it count! We should experiment with purpose, without any bias and prejudice.
For instance, recently I experimented with designing a logo for a friend. My intent was clear — I wanted to solve the brand identity problem.
I knew I lacked the necessary skills to create a perfect graphical output. But that didn’t stop me from experimenting with ideas, sketching concepts, and playing with fonts and colors. I was able to create something that made it easier to hand it off to a graphic designer, to make it final.
Closing Thoughts
We need to remind ourselves — that experimenting is not an activity that is married only to researchers and scientists.
Embracing a situation with a clear intent of trying out something — will yield favorable results — even if the experiment ‘fails!’ At least you will find out what won’t work for you.
We all experiment all the time, but often without realizing it.
Let’s do it consciously. Measure it. Share it. Let’s make it count.
