Do You Care What People Think When You Write?
My reflections on this question
My definitions of writing will include our writing of articles and our comments. Do you care?
In the community of Medium, anyone onboard can read our writings. Everyone has their style and standard of writing and differences in opinions. Of course, you can express your thoughts without being bothered by someone’s views.
However, the world is interconnected. What goes around will come around. So, we always need to be as diplomatic as possible. When we write in Medium, which is international, we do not fully perceive if our views are accepted well by another in a different culture. Therefore, we need to be careful with the choice of our words.
If we need to express our views, we should be humble to phrase them in a way that may not be hurtful to any reader. It may be challenging if you are an arrogant writer.
For example, when we comment on somebody’s writing on Medium, we must be courteous and gracious in our words. Courteous because you are addressing someone whose culture may be different from yours. Gracious because English may not be their native language, and they may be unable to communicate fluently.
In summary, courtesy and politeness in any communication are essential. We should be kind when we need to communicate through our writing.
The next time when you write, do give a thought to what I have shared. Be polite and gracious in our choice of words to use.
