Do Our Names Shape Our Destiny?

I find this weird because it seems as if our names do have the power to shape our character and destiny.

Twin brothers Adrut and Ajira did almost everything together. Competitive they are, but one thinks deeper than the other. They were different in their actions, choices, and decisions. They both finished college and got their degrees in business administration. Their father witnesses their competitiveness and being proud of their success suggested they go into business together. “I know you mean well Dad, but it’s time I venture on my own and start living my life as my own person, instead of part of a team,” Adrut said. It’s true Dad,” Ajira agrees. “It’s time we find our strength and weakness and learn new and different things about ourselves that we should have learned years ago.” Disappointed, their father relents, “Ok, if that’s what you both want. I am securing a loan for both of you to start your own business. I am giving you a sure route to success boys, don’t let me down.”

Five years later Ajira was almost at the finishing line to paying off his loan and owning his own business. Adrut couldn’t keep up. He didn’t pay his bills on time, which has occurred lots of late fees. Ajira would often check on his brother, but he would be either partying or on vacations in some small Islands where it was warmer. He was always doing something pleasurable. His excuse was, “Hey, I work hard, so I need to stop and smell the roses sometimes.” So Ajira allowed his brother his pleasure while taking none for himself.

Two years later Ajira finished his journey to success, paying off his loan and owning his business and house. Adrut was on the verge of losing everything, so he filed for bankruptcy protection. He found his brother at his office. Pleading, “I need your help.” “Father isn’t going to be happy about you filing for bankruptcy,” Ajira said. “What am I doing wrong?” Adrut complains sliding into a comfortable armchair, facing his brother’s huge mahogany desk, decorated with pictures of his wife and children. “I think almost every human on this planet got their stab at success,” Ajira said, facing his brother from behind his desk. “Many, like you, must stop to smell the roses, and boy did you smell. Every chance you got. Your lack of self-discipline slowed you down, and you missed opportunities that had re-routed because you weren’t available. You have allowed yourself to become a negative statistics brother, 65% of businesses failed during their first 10 years.” “Thanks for the compliment. I can stop and smell all of the roses now, of every color, and brother, they are unlimited,” Ajiar boasts.

I know many people that started their journey to success at the same time I did. I have seen them stopped and smell the roses many times. It’s been 10, 20 30 years and many of them still haven’t reached their destination.

Adrut means slow, Ajira means not slow, agile, and rapid.

My twin sons do almost everything together. They don’t stay away long from each other. The first twin name means Noble in Arabic. None of us knew the meaning of that name at the time. He has a heart of gold. He is so kind, he never passes a beggar on the street without giving them something. His kind heart pulls everyone to him. He helps everyone when he can, as long as he can. My husband and I think he has a guardian angel who is watching over him. More good things come his way than his brother. His twin brother’s name means mischievous in Swahili. And boy, does he break rules. My husband and I predict a harder life for him if he doesn’t change his ways. (Parents who take the time to know their children can sometimes tell what lies ahead) They both live up to their names subconsciously.

I find this weird because it seems as if names do have the power to shape our character. What do you think?
