Distribution Info 2.2 — fixing Medium’s redesign

Fun fact: my previous post about my extension got Chosen for further Distribution! I was over the moon to have my first story become Chosen by the regular process (I had only gotten them Chosen by submitting stories to publications that are automatically curated).

Oh, update: it’s no longer distributed. I knew I could do that, but I didn’t see it coming to my first Distributee right away ;(

Update: I have released yet another update. Read the release notes of version ‘Chocolate bar’ (2.3) here.

Seeing the Distribution, I was over the moon and scanned the article in question as a celebratory ritual. To my surprise, my extension didn’t work on it :’(

The extension worked. But some things had gone missing. Photo by Manish Tulaskar on Unsplash

Luckily, I had recently read an article about the redesign Medium is slowly running out all over Medium. It turns out that their changes broke the extension on this particular post. At other posts it still worked fine.

I created a fix (which is not very elegant) and turned to test it. After I was happy with the results, I noticed that if a story is not Distributed, the number of days left is shown. Wouldn’t it be consistent to also show how long it took to become Distributed? And that’s the next feature I started to hack.

The distribution is considerably faster than I am in creating extensions. Screenshot by author.

As you can see above it took Medium almost 7 days to process a story. I hope this appeals to some statistics-minded people out there.

What’s new in 2.1.2

Coding this version meant more distraction from doing some actual writing and getting my stories out. However, it’s a nice addition to the list of releases. New in this version:

  • Now works for posts that are shown in the new Medium redesign
  • Number of days to become distributed shown in the stat-details of a story
  • Removed unnecessary activity where the extension would try to execute code at places where it shouldn’t.

What’s coming up?

I figured out how to support custom medium domains with the extension (now it only runs on *.medium.com). I think that update is one you can definitely expect soon. The update requires some more permissions: my fix requires the extension to be active on every page you visit. Don’t worry. It’ll only do something at medium-pages.

Other than that, I don’t have any big plans. Want a feature badly, let me know in the comments! Or I’ll be forced to spend my time on doing some more code-cleanup (it’s getting tidier every time now, but I want to do a full overhaul).

Like this extension? You might like another one I wrote. It shows you when stories are scheduled:

Thanks for reading! If you notice more erratic behaviour from the extension (also if the redesign has nothing to do with it), please let me know in the comments.

Stay cool. Stay awesome and get your stories distributed!
