Disgraced USA Gymnastics Doctor Larry Nassar Stabbed in Prison

Inmate Assaults Nassar, Prompting Investigation into Prison Security

Larry Nassar, the former doctor of USA Gymnastics who was convicted of sexually abusing young female gymnasts, has been stabbed multiple times by another inmate in prison. The incident took place at the U.S. Penitentiary Coleman in Florida, and Nassar is reported to be in stable condition. The Federal Bureau of Prisons has confirmed the assault, and an internal investigation is underway.

The stabbing occurred on Sunday afternoon, and prison staff immediately intervened, providing life-saving measures to Nassar. He was then transported to a local hospital for further treatment and evaluation. The FBI has been notified of the incident and is involved in the ongoing investigation. Fortunately, no other inmates or staff members were injured during the incident.

Nassar, whose 2018 conviction resulted in a decades-long prison sentence, sustained ten stab wounds, including two in the neck, two in the back, and six in the chest. His conviction came after an extraordinary week-long hearing where 160 of his victims bravely shared their stories of abuse. Among his victims were prominent Olympic gymnasts such as Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, and McKayla Maroney.

The Nassar scandal led to significant changes within USA Gymnastics, including a complete overhaul of its leadership and the organization’s subsequent filing for bankruptcy. The fallout from the scandal also resulted in Michigan State University agreeing to a $500 million settlement with the hundreds of women who were sexually abused by Nassar. Additionally, USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee reached a $380 million settlement.

A July 2021 report by the Justice Department Inspector General shed light on grave errors made by the FBI, which allowed Nassar to continue his abuse of at least 70 more victims before his arrest. In September 2021, high-profile Olympic gymnasts, including Biles and Maroney, testified before a U.S. Senate panel about the sexual abuse they endured under Nassar’s care.

During the hearing, the gymnasts criticized the FBI for mishandling the investigation and accused the bureau of turning a blind eye to Nassar’s victims.

The recent stabbing of Larry Nassar in prison raises questions about prison security and the safety of inmates convicted of high-profile crimes. The incident serves as a reminder of the profound impact Nassar’s actions had on his victims and the ongoing efforts to address the systemic failures that allowed his abuse to persist for so long.
