Discovering Joy: Embracing The Beauty Of Life’s Simple Pleasures

Joy can be discovered in the simple pleasures of life, detached from external actions or materialistic pursuits. For instance, finding joy does not rely on acquiring the latest iPhone 15.

Instead, the essence of joy is rooted in our state of mind.

The other day I was out with my best friend from school. We had met after almost four decades. It was a sunny day, and we sat together on a garden bench, basking in the morning sunlight and enjoying each other’s company. As we caught up on the passing years, there was no specific goal to accomplish. We simply desired to be in each other’s presence and engage in heartfelt conversations.

In that ordinary moment, both of us felt overwhelming joy and gratitude. We shared laughter while reminiscing about the pranks we played during our school days.

The experience of joy can be found in appreciating the beauty of a sunset, marveling at the stars, listening to beloved music, relishing the melodious chirping of birds, savoring the invigorating aroma of morning coffee, or sharing laughter with friends. The possibilities for finding joy are endless.

Sometimes I feel burdened by depression or stress. During such times, I find solace in visiting the children’s park in our building. Observing the carefree nature of children as they play, laugh, and chase each other helps me temporarily forget my worries.

Immersed in the joyful atmosphere, I allow myself to freely indulge in the innocence and exuberance of the kids’ movements.

By focusing on these small moments of joy, irrespective of external circumstances, helps me cultivate a positive mindset.

Joy resides in the little things that surround us, waiting to be cherished and embraced.

Finding joy in little things

Here are a few practices I engage in to cultivate joy:

  1. Embracing Gratitude: Each day, I dedicate a few moments to write down three things that I am grateful for in my daily diary. This helps me shift my focus toward the positives in my life, enabling me to appreciate the small blessings that often go unnoticed.
  2. Mindful Presence: I incorporate mindfulness into my daily routine by taking deliberate pauses and deep breaths. During a leisurely walk, I attempt to immerse myself in the present moment and pay close attention to my surroundings. Along the way, I stop by our building’s garden and take a moment to admire the vibrant colors and delicate fragrances of the flowers. This brings me immense joy and helps me establish a deeper connection with nature.
  3. Sunrise Serenity: As part of my morning ritual, I indulge in a cup of ginger chai , while witnessing the breathtaking beauty of the sunrise. I pause to marvel at the sun’s ascent above the horizon, casting a warm glow that fills the sky. This serene moment allows me to start the day with a sense of wonder and appreciation, infusing my being with joy and tranquility.

By including these practices in my life, I have discovered that joy can be found in the seemingly ordinary moments.

“If the sight of the blue skies fills you with joy, if a blade of grass springing up in the fields, has the power to move you, if the simple things of Nature have a message that you understand, rejoice, for your soul is alive.”- Eleonora Duse
