An Ode to Everest, My Ukrainian Friend: Memories of Providence

We met at Fellini’s Pizza, I was working as a Barista. We were young.

You played chess With your Belarus friend. You reminded me of everything I’d forgotten, About playing the game.

I watched you perform, You were brilliant. A skilled drummer.

You visited my studio, You met my best friend, We played cards Until the sun came up.

You weren’t there, So you didn’t know it, But you Held my hand In the ER, For my first panic attack.

I moved home, But we kept in touch.

We went to The Limelight And we danced, Together. In the strobe light I had my second panic attack. We left early, Together.

You played Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness. And we fell away From each other.

I’ll never forget you, We will always have The Smashing Pumpkins.

Thank you for reading my poem. I’d love to hear your opinions.
