Desire for the Unfathomable
The Lark’s poetry competition 2022 submission
i should have asked. what were you. before this illimitable universe expanded. one small part of what. dark energy. your vastness bible’d under oil blacked skies.
or were you birthed in craters. centuries of rain contained under gravity. tides tethered to the moon.
w h a t e v e r —
for i am forever drawn to you.
i can smell you on the breeze. inhale your salinity. and hear you with my heart. the sink of fresh damp sand a tease upon my senses. declaring you are close.
will you lick my toes. with cool wet water. to bathe my ankles. naked. ‘til up toward my thighs. in anticipation. i catch my breath
or should i simply float upon your oceanic surface. to douse my flesh. gasping. as you stroke my neck. and savour salt upon my lips.
i should have asked. forgive me then. what are you?
i find it difficult to comprehend your unfathomable depths of darkness. your fathoms of aqua water. dripping skin blue. when scintillating skies smile. and Neptune wades to where your sea drifts. gut-weed woven across your slender tidal pools.
but my desire heightens when fractious tempers crave waves of ferocity thundering Cornish coastlines the grey granite no soldier for your thalassic fleets. for within your heart you harbour shipwrecks. mariners buried deep beneath the rust and timber of levigated frigates run aground.
is this then the sound of you that claims me. the rush and roar of crashing waves which raise my heartbeat.
no.
for I would swoon whatever temperament you offer. for you arrest me. your ebbs. your flows. and even so your danger. but then i know you will not hurt me as half of me is salty water too. no mermaid. but a landlocked fish without a tail
i listen to the pebbles tumble under you and tempt your surf to tow me under too
for you I would forever cast myself adrift
t h e r e f o r e — before my passion is the death of us you must tell me what you were before. before time began. so I can fathom your existence
then as your disciple i will walk upon the waters of my sea god for you to part your waves. and with your blessing plunge your freezing depths.
so long as time. and my misfortune. forget to drown us both.
