Desire.

Why can’t we help ourselves? After all, we’re not alone. The Buddha left us his teachings to help with this very problem: overcoming desire aka greed, wanting and craving. It all comes down to the same thing which causes our suffering.

Of all the things we think we want, which we have to have or need to do, how many of them end up disappointing us? This is because they are not really desirable or right for us in the first place. Our mind tricks us again and again and we fall for it.

Every sense object, mental impression and physical phenomenon which we experience is impermanent, unsatisfactory and not of a self. They simply delude us.

For example, I personally question how many times in the past I thought, “Wow! I really must have those amazing shoes!” then maybe wore them once and they killed me so they ended up in the back of the wardrobe. This is desire and greed but I couldn’t help myself. I think we’re all in the same boat. Why can’t we see the truth of reality just as the Buddha wanted? This is why he gave us the teachings. To help us but we just can’t get over ourselves long enough to make it stick.

Some days I really think I’ve cracked it but the next day ‘Bang!’ old habits return and I allow myself to be led astray. I guess we need to try harder if we really, really do want to overcome greed, aversion and delusion.

Liberating ourselves from suffering is no mean feat but it is a worthy goal. When we hit a brick wall and maybe an element of self-sabotage or lack of discipline starts to creep in we have to fortify ourselves and push forward with increased determination. What better way is there to use our valuable time?

With metta 🙏

May this teaching lead you to realisation; may it help you know the truth. May we all be freed from the suffering of birth and death.
