DEKIN Innovation System (2018)
A framework for understanding social positions behind innovation
Two years ago, I developed a framework called DEKIN Innovation System for understanding the landscape of innovation in the digital age. The name DEKIN is for remembering my father Dejin Ding.
The 3P Focus
This DEKIN framework was developed with a 3P focus: People, Position and Practice.
First, I considered the innovation system as a social practice which focuses on the innovative activities.
Second, I chose “People — Practice” as my unit of analysis.
Third, I added “Position” as mediation for “People — Practice”.
Social Positions
The most unique insights of DEKIN framework discovered is the 12 types of social positions with are embedded in the innovation system. I organized these 12 types of social positions into 3 groups: D-positions, C-Positions and R-positions.

Zoom in: Typical Activities
In order to understand innovation related human activity, I developed a typology of activity with three dimensions of complexity: cognitive complexity, interactional complexity and intentional complexity.
Based on the typology, I discovered five typical activities: Think, Make, Curate, Say and Play.

This section is a zoom in view of practice. Innovation is for serving people. This typology of activity helps innovators understanding people’s social practice.
Zoom out: Landscape of Innovation
The third component of DEKIN framework is the landscape of innovation which is the social context for innovative activities.
Based on a 2x2 matrix, I consider four components for the landscape of innovation: Institution, Technology, Mind and Behavior. Each component has its own key. The key of Institution is Value. The key of Technology is Difference. The key of Mind is Meaning. The key of Behavior is Situation.
CALL for Action: People First
Now we have a framework, we can use it to guide our action. The DEKIN framework believes we need to put people first in order to build a positive and sustainable innovation system.
There is also a key for each group of position. The key of D-positions is Capability. The key of C-positions is Utility. The key of R-positions is Influence.
This insight points out three innovate paths: servicing D-positions by enhancing capability, servicing C-positions by enriching utility, and servicing R-positions by engaging influence.
CALL for Hope: Building The Future We Want
The DEKIN framework aims to provide a people-centered perspective on innovation thinking. The innovation system guide us to build the future. If we want to build a future we want, we must be respect the following 3E principles.
The 3E principles are Human Enhancement, Human Enrichment and Human Engagement.

Based on the Pinwheel framework, the DEKIN framework is categorized as a Creative Model which aims to impact your mind. Frameworks don’t help you solve problems, but they can help you think problems in a different way. I hope you like these frameworks.
