PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE
Deer, Sweet Chestnuts, and a Colorful Forest
Week twelve of the photographic documentary of my daily life
This week has been exciting for me. I love seeing animals in nature. Spotting wildlife in the forest is a game of luck. To be at the right time and the right spot. Earlier in the year when I was cycling to work every day I got to see some of them almost every day.
Since the season changed and it got colder I’m not driving with the bicycle anymore. But I go for walks about four to five times a week. Long walks in the forest. I’m usually gone for over two hours. With nothing else with me except my camera.
Perfect for Dennett’s photography challenge. I get to choose from a lot of pictures every day. I’m showing you my week in photographs. Every day one photograph. It’s a very interesting way of looking at life. You learn to appreciate every day on its own.

It was almost dark when we got home today. But these leaves were shining despite the darkness. I love these colors. The colors of fall. An incredible diversity of colors.

Today was the lucky day. We went later in the afternoon for our daily walk. Chatting now and then, trying not to make too much noise we were hoping to see some deer. And then I saw them. Not far from us three deer were hiding in the undergrowth.
Pretty much the same time I spotted them they heard us. They were running away from us. But I was hoping they would run up the mountain. That would mean they’d cross our path again.
I had my camera in my hand waiting for them to appear. But I was too excited about what just happened and was breathing hard. I was kind of like a child who sees the first time a dog.
And then they came. Full speed ahead the first one was crossing the road. It only needed three steps and was gone again. Missed it. Instead of waiting for the next one I lifted my eye and took a glance above my camera. The very moment the second one comes up. Missed that one as well.
Not being sure if a third one was coming I was simply stupid not waiting to see what happens. There I missed all three of them. Maybe not missed them completely but I didn’t get a photograph that was worth posting.
But it was great. First spotting them in the undergrowth, then hearing them running on the dry leaves of the forest floor, and finally seeing them in front of us.
Nature in its beauty.

Contrast is present in the forest. Most of the leaves are still green. Trees shining in their last coat before it gets colored and disappears entirely. And at the bottom, the brown forest floor is showing what is to come.
Everything will become one with the forest floor. Sooner or later. Leaves, branches, seeds, and other pieces falling from the trees create a thick layer on the ground.

The days are getting colder. Not even talking about the nights. And in this village surrounded by nothing but forest, it’s obvious that people heat their houses with wood. Burning wood.
The steam coming out of this chimney is indicating the temperature. Close to zero degrees this morning.

We just entered the forest on today’s walk when we ran into my landlord. The lady was walking her dog and asking me if we were here to collect sweet chestnuts. Sweet chestnuts? I wasn’t even aware there were any trees of this kind in the area.
Well, a few steps later I spotted the first ones. Explaining to my partner what they are, we ended up walking across forest soil covered in these nuts. I’ve never seen that many of them. I also have never collected them. Only ate them once at a Christmas market.
Thinking about picking up one or two, I decide against it and capture their beauty instead. They are a serious gem of the forest.

This is what describes the whole of October so far the best. Raindrops. It’s been raining pretty much every day. Not for long and not a lot. But every day. There were a few days when it didn’t stop raining. And there were some days when the rain was so soft that you barely realized the rain.
I haven’t seen a blue sky since September left us. I caught us talking about a blue sky and sunny day only because we saw a tiny little blue whole in the sky. We had 100% cloud cover for the past 20 days.
I guess that is not what they call the golden October. At least not this year. It feels like we’re jumping ahead and experiencing the grey and wet November. November is still waiting for us and I can’t wait to see what it holds for us.

Coming out of the forest this beauty was busy on the dead tree. Picking for insects jumping all around the stem. Wearing a beautiful blue cap I was wondering what type of bird it is.
There isn’t one book enough to cover my mom’s knowledge about birds. Instead of doing some research I simply send her the picture waiting to hear her description of this bird.
It’s a woodpecker. Looking at the color on his head it is probably a female great spotted woodpecker. If that is the right word in English.

I’m looking forward to a change of scenery. Even though I enjoy this forest I am excited about going to the Alps next week.
Thank you for following me another week throughout my life. Another week in nature. If you enjoy taking photographs too you are welcome to join the challenge. Not many rules, it’s just about you. Create your post around 7 photographs taken once every day for a week. And please tag me in it. I would love to read it!
