Deciding Which Fiction Book to Write

Last week, I wrote about my dilemma of deciding between two book ideas. Rambling Rose gave me some excellent advice to see which project I’m more excited to work on. I haven’t given myself much time to think about Book Idea Two, beyond writing up a few pages of ideas. So I’m going to spend July freewriting my ideas and seeing where that takes me with the Camp NaNoWriMo challenge which begins July 1st. So I need to decide which book idea I will go with by the end of July. There will be no turning back, the other idea will need to wait.

Want to join me at Camp NaNoWriMo? In case you’re not familiar with the challenge, writers set a writing (or editing) goal in July. Unlike NaNoWriMo in November, you decide on the word count goal. I don’t know about you, but as a writer I find motivation when I write during these types of challenges. The competitor in me pushes through the excuses when I see other writers posting about their personal goals.

The challenge begins Thursday (is anyone else thrown off that the month of June is nearly over?! Or is that just me?. I rarely wait until the last minute to plan my goal but here I am a few days prior). I have two projects in mind which I will combine for my goal of writing 25,000 words in July. I wanted to do more but will be out of town for a few days in July so I need to be realistic.

Besides my fiction book, I’m also working on a nonfiction book. I’m taking part in a writing challenge held by Shaunta Grimes which begins in July. The challenge is called Blog Your Own Book. In August, I will post each day on Medium. I will turn those 31 posts into a book that I will self-publish at the end of this year or early next year.
