Summary

The author, a writer on the platform, is reaching out to readers for feedback on what topics they find missing and would like to read about, emphasizing the importance of reader input beyond what algorithms can predict.

Abstract

The author has been actively writing and engaging with other writers and editors on the platform for over a year but has yet to connect with readers. Recognizing the value of reader perspectives, the author seeks to understand what motivates readers to choose certain stories, applaud them, or leave comments. While algorithms can suggest content based on existing reader choices, the author points out that these do not account for unwritten topics that readers might be interested in. The author expresses a desire to break the bias of writer-centric content creation by directly asking readers about the articles they wish to see but have not found. Readers are invited to share their thoughts via comments, email, or Twitter, emphasizing the importance of their contributions to the platform's content diversity.

Opinions

  • The author values the opinions of readers as much as those of writers and editors, considering them part of the platform's extended family.
  • There is a belief that algorithms, while useful, are limited in their ability to predict reader interests and cannot suggest topics that have not been covered before.
  • The author acknowledges a personal bias as both a reader and a writer, and actively seeks to overcome this by soliciting direct feedback from the reader community.
  • The author suggests that the current state of content is influenced heavily by what has already been written, rather than what readers might want to read but hasn't been created yet.
  • There is an emphasis on the importance of reader engagement in shaping the future of content on the platform, with the author encouraging readers to share their desired topics and articles.

Dear Reader

I would like to get to know you better

A reader, by Sincerely Media

I’ve been writing here for more than a year and have met several writers and editors. It’s great, I love them, and some even feel like they’re part of my extended family.

But I haven’t met a reader.

I’m sure there are plenty of people out there, in the electronic cloud, who are reading and never writing.

What I would like today is to meet readers.

I would like to know what they think, what makes them click on this story instead of that one, what makes them clap for an article or comment?

  • You could say, “look at the homepage, and you’ll see the algorithm’s recommendations; they’re based on the readers’ choices after all.
  • You could say, “just ask yourself, aren’t you reading articles?

True.

But, also, false.

The algorithm cannot guess what readers want. It can (sort of) only guess what they want more. The algorithm doesn’t create articles and topics out of thin air; it needs inputs.

But these inputs are based only on existing stories. They don’t include what has not been written.

As a reader, I’m biased because I’m also a writer. And I don’t want to know what writers want to read. I want to know what readers want to read.

So, this is my question to the readers out there:

What are the exciting topics that are missing? What’s the one article you would love to read but have never found so far?

Comment, send an email, or reach me on Twitter.

But, please, do tell me! Tell us.
