August 25th, Friday — Lima and Final Words
Today, I completed my final tours in Cusco until 14:30, and I visited the museums I could see with my bundled museum ticket. Then, I headed to the airport for my journey to Lima. In the evening, I arrived at the capital. There was a bit of disappointment because none of the interesting, local, colorful things I experienced in Pucallpa, especially Cusco are here. People here are not the same indigenous people I saw up to now; they are more like the South Americans we’re already familiar with.
The hostel is located in the city center, built in 1900, an Italian-made place called 1900 Hostel. The guests are primarily backpackers, and another thing I didn’t realize when making the reservation is that the bathroom and toilet are shared ones, not in the room.
It’s pretty noisy here due to its central location and the young crowd staying at the hostel, but it will be ok for one night.
In scuba diving, when you dive deep and it’s time to go up, you must wait at specific depths while ascending; this is called “decompression”, or “deco”. If you ascend quickly without this waiting period, you can get decompression sickness.
In the past two weeks, my journey from Ronin Sina to Pucallpa, then to Cusco, and finally to Lima has been like surfacing while doing necessary deco stops.
I remember my first night at Ronin Sina, saying “Under the sky, above the ground, I am alone and also with everything as one.” Tonight I am on the terrace of 1900 Hostel with the young people playing foosball. And for sure I know that I would have gotten damaged if I rushed to the surface without all these “deco” stops.
The next step is the madness of the airport, followed by a 26-hour return journey that will lead me back to Istanbul on Monday.
Final Words
On this final day of my trip, I have only 42 days until my birthday. I will enter my 53rd year with the happiness of having completed this entire journey.
When I think about these two weeks, the only thing that seems to be missing right now is coming to South America and not dancing at all.
By around 7 p.m. every evening, I returned to my hotel, completely drained of energy, and didn’t have the chance to dance while planning the adventures for the next day. I’m putting this on the to-do list for the next time.
