Garbo Talks. But not much

Stockholm, Sweden was a dark and grey place, as Greta Garbo recalled about her birthplace in 1905. Her childhood descriptions sounded like scenes from Dickens novels, but always a dreamer and a loner, Greta soon found her way out.

“I never said, ‘I want to be alone.’ I only said, ‘I want to be let alone!’ There is all the difference.”

As her star rose in Hollywood in the silent era and then with talking pictures, Garbo did her best to avoid the invasive press. She rarely attended Hollywood socials or awards ceremonies.

Despite her attempts at evading the public, her mystique made her the highest-earning star of the silent era. In the end, Greta Garbo found her solitude. She never married or had children. One can only assume that was exactly how she wanted her life to progress.

Today is:

Cheeseburger Day — I’ll have one to save room for…

Rice Krispies Treat Day — or LCMs in Australia, or Rice Krispies Squares in Canada. What’s in a name? This simple marshmallow gooey snack has been around for more than 80 years.

Musical Ride

In 1981, Genesis released their third album after the split by Peter Gabriel. The album Abacab was a complete departure from previous work and produced with complete freedom by the band members. The record’s single No Reply At All featured Earth, Wind, and Fire’s horns and coincided perfectly with the new medium, MTV.

Interesting Notes

In 1977, the space probe Voyager 1 sent the first photograph of the Moon with a distant Earth. As of today, Voyager has been operational for 44 years and 13 days.

Gone But Not Forgotten

Exhausted and strung out from heavy partying and touring in 1970, Jimi Hendrix was found dead in his basement from an overdose of barbituates mixed with alcohol.

Jimi only produced three albums before his death at the age of 27, but he is still considered one of the greatest guitar talents of all time.

Notable Births

1933 — Robert Blake said, “I was on the set when I was five years old with Spencer Tracy. A lot of what I learned growing up in terms of artistry is very clean, very tidy, very organized.”

1961 — James Gandolfini said, “Standing in public in other people’s clothes, pretending to be someone else. It’s a strange way for a grown man to make a living.”
