Day Tripping: September 13
Movie Mogul

A gifted performer, playwright, filmmaker, and studio head, Tyler Perry was born in 1969 in New Orleans. Tyler legally changed his name from Emmitt Jr to distance himself from an abusive father. Perry found writing as a therapeutic outlet during his teenage years.
“It’s not an easy journey, to get to a place where you forgive people. But it is such a powerful place, because it frees you.”
Though some of his methods have been questioned by members of his own community, Perry’s rise to prominence in entertainment has been meteoric. He has consistently promoted work from diverse artists.
Tyler Perry’s philanthropic exploits earned him a Governor’s Award from the daytime Emmy’s in 2020, and the Humanitarian Award from the Oscars in 2021.
