Day Tripping: October 3
The Sky Is Crying

In 1954, Stephen Ray Vaughan was born into a family constantly on the move. His father Jimmie, was a hard-working, hard-drinking blue collar asbestos worker. As a result, young Stevie grew up in an abusive household. His father often vented his anger on Stevie and his older brother Jimmie Jr.
Stevie grew up idolizing his brother and learned guitar from Jimmie’s hand-me-downs. His first electric was a Gibson ES-125T. Stevie also spent most of his childhood listening to Albert King, Otis Rush, and Muddy Waters.
“You see, we are here, as far as I can tell, to help each other — our brothers, our sisters, our friends, our enemies. That’s to help each other, not hurt each other.”
In 1970, ZZ Top asked Stevie and his band Liberation to play at a hotel in Dallas where they were regulars. Within five years, Stevie Ray Vaughan was jamming with his childhood heroes, Buddy Guy and Albert King. Every rock star that attended a Stevie Ray Vaughan show was compelled to move his career forward.
Vaughan’s father died on August 27, 1986, four years to the day before Stevie’s fatal helicopter crash. Stevie Ray Vaughan was only 35 years old.

Gone But Not Forgotten
Two years before her iconic role as Marion Crane in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, Janet Leigh acted in A Touch of Evil for another legendary director, Orson Welles. She was one of the few stars who didn’t concern herself with the image her character portrayed. As a result, she earned her reputation as a consummate professional.
Janet Leigh died in 2004 at the age of 77. She reportedly avoided showers for the last 34 years of her life.
