Laura Horowitz was born in Winona, Minnesota in 1971. Her parents are both authors and editors, and Laura’s father once worked with Timothy Leary as an archivist.

Named for her hometown, laura’s first name is actually Winona. But her family moved to California when she was ten where school thugs bullied her, mistaking her for a boy.

“The older you get, the more yourself you can be and the less worried you are about what other people think.”

Winona earned her first film role in Lucas when she was only fourteen. It was then she chose to use the name Ryder as her stage name. With the help of director Tim Burton, Winona Ryder’s rise to fame was rapid.

Her success in Beetlejuice was followed by Edward Scissorhands and then a starring role next to Daniel Day Lewis in Age of Innocence. The Martin Scorcese film earned Ryder a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar nomination in 1993.

Winona took a five-year hiatus while suffering from a stomach disorder and getting arrested for shoplifting in 2001. All her life she stuggled with depression and anti-semitism. Her father, whose family had all peished in the Holocaust, was not religious. But Winona has always identified as Jewish.

Ryder has since returned to successful roles in the movie Star Trek as Spock’s mother, and the television hit, Stranger Things. She has given much of her spare time and financial aid to college funds for less fortunate Native Americans.
