Cinematic Mastery

In 1954, Ang Lee was born in a military village of the Republic of China Armed Forces in Taiwan. He grew up in a family that emphasized education first and his father expected Ang to become a professor. But after failing university entry exams, Lee went to a community college where he became interested in the arts.
After completing military service, Lee moved to the United States to study theater. He returned home with a short film from graduate school that won him an outstanding film award in Taiwan.
“The fear factor actually brings the genuineness.”
In 1990, Lee wrote two screenplays for a Government Information Office competition. The scripts for Pushing Hands and The Wedding Banquet came first and second. Pushing Hands became his first feature directing project.
