Day Tripping: November 3

Activist In Cleats

Most people see an athlete in uniform. Others see a young man with such conviction, he was willing to jeopardize his entire career for his beliefs. Rare individuals like this always fly in the face of oppressors.

“Most people don’t want to change. They’re comfortable and set in their ways. But in order to change, you have to be able to agitate people at times. And I think that’s something that’s very necessary for us to improve as a country.”

Colin Kaepernick was born in 1987 to a nineteen-year-old, white mother in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Colin never knew his father, and when he was five weeks, his mother put Colin up for adoption. A family named Kaepernick with two biological children chose adoption after losing two other sons.

In high school, Colin excelled in baseball but switched to football when he received a scholarship from the University of Nevada. During a six-year professional career and one Super Bowl appearance with the San Francisco 49ers, Kaepernick’s life changed dramatically in 2016.

Colin began kneeling during the US National anthem every week of the season in protest of police brutality toward people of color. Despite growing criticism from fans and politicians, Kaepernick stuck to his beliefs. By 2017, Colin was no longer a member of the 49ers.

Colin’s continuing story has nothing to do with his athletic talents. Yet he has been a focal point for the hypocrisy of professional sports and society in general. As league officials and coaches still make platitudes toward his cause, no one has shown the courage to hire the man to do his job since.
