Day Tripping: November 15
Maestro

Annunzio Paolo Mantovani was born into a musical family in 1905 in Venice, Italy. His father was concertmaster for the Milan opera house, La Scala until the family moved to England in 1912.
After graduating from Trinity College of Music, Annunzio became one of the most popular BBC radio big band leaders and recording artists. When he worked with the arranger Ronald Binge, the Montovani Sound emerged and became a signature of British airways for decades.
His cascading strings can be heard throughout his numerous hits and more than fifty albums. Montovani was England’s most celebrated recording artist before the Beatles.
“Mantovani was a great influence on me.” – Brian May
Besides Queen’s lead guitarist, Montovani influenced many other great musicians, including the sixties rock band The Kinks, and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
