Day Tripping: November 12
More than The Thinker

Born in Paris in 1840, Auguste Rodin began to draw at the age of ten while educating himself at home. His working-class parents had little time for schooling and no money for his education. At seventeen, he sculpted a clay model to try for entry into the Grande Ecole, but he was rejected for not displaying Neoclassical form.
Rodin continued his art on his own, but when his sister died in 1862, he was stricken with grief and gave up his art. He joined a Catholic order where the founder recognized his talent and convinced Rodin to return to sculping.
“To the artist, there is never anything ugly in nature.”
Auguste Rodin was often called the father of Modernism. In the Victorian era, he was an independent thinker with a new sensibility while still honouring the classic traditions.
