Greg Lake was born into a working-class family in Dorset in 1947. He discovered a love for rock and roll when he listened to Lucille by Little Richard in 1957. That same year at the age of twelve, Greg learned to play the guitar and wrote his first song. It was called Lucky Man.

“I think for me, any great art is art which communicates human emotion.”

A few years later, Lake met another man from Dorset maned Robert Fripp and joined his band called King Crimson as the bass player and singer. Fripp felt Greg’s vocal range went beyond any he had heard elsewhere.

Greg also contributed lyrics to their debut album, In The Court of the Crimson King. Greg Lake also produced the record after the original producer walked away from the project.

While on tour to support the album, King Crimson opened for a band called the Nice featuring keyboardist Keith Emerson. When they returned to the UK in 1970, Emerson and Lake were joined by Carl Palmer to form the progressive rock supergroup, ELP.

King Crimson is recognized as a pioneer of the progressive rock movement. As Emerson. Lake and Palmer, the trio took rock to new and complex levels. However, their only charting single was Lucky Man.
