Early Crash

The Gilded Age of the late nineteenth century in America was time of industrial growth and prosperity, mostly through investment in commodities around the world. In 1893, when wheat crops crumbled and an attempted coup upset the balance in Argentina, it triggered the first Black Friday.

The New York Stock Exchange collapsed from these and other events like the failure of National Cordage, a virtual monopoly trust with massive holdings in binder twine, a run on gold signalled thebeginning of a four-year depression.

New Proof

The London murder trial of the Stratton Brothers in 1905, marks the first time a conviction comes as a result from the use of forensic science. During the investigation of the apparent robbery and beating of the shop owner couple, fingerprint evidence was introduced to put the perpetrators at the scene.

For the first time, a latent thumbprint was discovered on the back of the cash box which identified one of the Stratton brothers who were ultimately hanged for their brutal crime.

Heart Of A Champion

When discussing the greatest athletic careers of all time, there may be no better example than the thoroughbred chestnut, Secretariat. As a three-year-old on this day in 1973, the big red stallion won the Kentucky Derby in a record time of 1:59.2 seconds, a feat that has never been broken.Secretariat then went on to complete the American Triple Crown a month later by winning the Belmont Stakes turf race by a mind blowing 31 lengths and another record for turf racing.

He was so far ahead of the field, no other horse appeared in the long shot photograph of the finish line. As if another record for a 1 1/2 mile turf race wasn’t enough, Secretariat then travelled around thecontinent that year to win four more major Stakes races.

Musical Milestones

Saying, “I don’t want people to come to a show and think that I used to be great,” Tina Turner performed the last show of her 50th Anniversary Tour at Sheffield Arena in England.

Narratives

Tennessee teacher John T Scopes was arrested for teaching evolution in 1925, getting himself caught up in the famous Monkey Trial defended by Clarence Darrow.

Remembrance
